OPP will look to stop dangerous drivers over Thanksgiving weekend

Stay safe and be responsible on the roads, this Thanksgiving Day weekend.

That message comes from OPP, which will be conducting patrols over the three days.

Police say they’ll be on the lookout for what they call “the Big 4” factors that lead to collisions and deaths.

They are distracted driving, aggressive – or stunt – driving, impaired driving and not wearing seatbelts.

The patrols are part of a traffic-safety program called Operation Impact, meant to keep the roads extra safe on holiday weekends.

There have been 268 fatalities on OPP-patrolled roads across the province so far this year, through to the end of September.

That’s a 24 per cent increase over the same time period last year.

Police say most of the fatal crashes were caused by drivers consciously making bad decisions, and failing to take seriously the enormous responsibility of operating a motor vehicle.
