KILLALOE: Are you troubled by news stories about people dying? Or worried about your own mortality?

Death is a tricky thing to talk about in most places – but not at an event happening in Killaloe this Saturday.

Madawaska Valley Hospice Palliative Care is hosting a Death Cafe.

Dawn Cruchet, a retired grief counsellor who now lives in the area, will host the event. She describes Death Cafes as safe spaces to talk about the sometimes taboo subject.

“I’m thinking that coming through COVID, the death of the Queen, the horrific hurricane in the east, people are thinking about their own mortality,” she said. “What do you do with that? We’re a death denying society. We don’t do death. We don’t talk about it. Deaf Cafes give you that social context, because you’re having tea and coffee, to talk about something that maybe you’ve never expressed before.”

She says it’s important for people to have a safe, non judgemental space to talk about death.  That could mean talking about wills, assisted-death or other difficult topics.

“Nobody’s judging,” Cruchet added. “Whatever you say, whatever you think is fine. We often don’t get that in our society”.

The Death Cafe runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the community building at 12 North Street.
