Madawaska Valley residents looking for a reason to spend more time by the water in the summer still have time to sign up for an upcoming program.

Township staff say spots are still open for people interested in signing up for a course run by the Lifesaving Society, Canada’s national, volunteer-run governing body for lifeguards.

The program is a beginner-level course for prospective lifeguards.

Complete beginners will be able to work towards a “Bronze Medallion” certification, while people who have that certification as well as first-aid training can work towards a “Bronze Cross,” a prerequisite to becoming a National Lifeguard.

The course begins on August 15th and will run until the 19th, and costs $200 to take part in.

Lessons are happening at Lakeshore Park in Barry’s Bay.

The Township of Madawaska Valley’s website has details on how to register.
