First Nations and Local Chiefs mark Indigenous People’s Day

First Nations across Canada are celebrating their history and culture today.

In our area, the Algonquins of Ontario are hosting a variety of events in Ottawa, including the Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival. Events are also scheduled in Pembroke at the Waka-ehi Lodge, including building a sweat under the guidance of indigenous elders.

Chief Wendy Jocko of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation says these events are a wonderful opportunity to learn about the culture and traditions of Indigenous people. She wishes for everyone to get out and enjoy the festivities in their area.

Algonquin Territory stretches across all of our broadcast area, from North Bay to north of Kingston, and hugs the Ottawa River to the border of Quebec.
