In April, you will be paying more at the landfill in Madawaska Valley.
Council has approved a rate hike for garbage bags for both residents and businesses. The $1 bag tags will be increased to $2. Operations Manager Hillary Kutchkoski says this is the first increase for the tag in over 20 years.
Further, businesses will see a steady increase in their bin rates. The rate will be increased from $7.20 per cubic metre to $10. After that, there will be an increase over the next two years, which will see businesses pay $20 per cubic metre by 2024.

The Township cited increased stress on its municipal landfills as the reason for the increase. The changes will come into effect after the fees by-law is passed in April.
