Important to clear vents after snow storm, says Madawaska Valley Fire Chief

Fire Chief Corwin Quade is warning that the recent snowfall comes with its own safety risk.

The head of the Madawaska Valley Fire Department says that snow blocking vents could pose a safety risk. He says that vents must have at least 30 centimeters (one foot) of clearance to stop the buildup of harmful gasses.

For those using generators, make sure they are in an open and well vented area. He is also urging people to not use propane heaters or barbecues inside.

Finally, Quade urges people to not shovel large amounts of snow at once, especially if they are at risk of having a heart attack. Instead, shovel thin layers of snow at a time in order to prevent extra strain.
