Emergency departments not for COVID testing, says Health Unit

The Renfrew County District Health Unit says the emergency rooms (ERs) in their region are for urgent care only.

The health unit has seen an increase in people going to ERs looking for testing, or looking for treatment for mild COVID-19 symptoms. Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Cushman says that while the ERs are open for urgent care, they are not the place for asymptomatic testing or the treatment of mild COVID-19 symptoms.

The health unit is urging people with mild COVID-19 symptoms to self isolate immediately, and self monitor. They also remind the public that PCR testing is no longer available to them, only to the high risk population.

The health unit is urging people to instead contact the Renfrew County Virtual Triage and Assessment Centre if they have COVID symptoms and need more information. They can be reached at 1-844-727-6404.
