The last week of the year was eventful for the local fire department.

Fire Chief Corwin Quade of the Madawaska Valley Fire Department says they responded to a few incidents to wrap up the end of the year. The biggest was a structure fire on Arbor Vitae Road around 9 AM on December 30th. The electrical fire in a cottage was put out in 20 minutes and caused $5,000 in damages. Quade credits a neighbour calling 911 immediately for preventing any more damage.

Two other incidents forced firefighters to work over the holidays. The first one happened on Christmas Day when crews were dispatched to a collision on Dafoe Road. A van had hit a hydro pole, causing downed power lines. Those in the vehicle sustained minor injuries. The second was a brush fire on Airport Road, which was called off after firefighters discovered it was a controlled burn.
