An art installation honouring victims of gender-based violence may be erected in Madawaska Valley.

The monument is the latest of several that have been erected across Renfrew County, following installations in Eganville, Pembroke, Pikwakanagan and Killaloe. Red Dress Productions will be helping create the monument. They are fresh off finishing a similar monument in Bancroft.

The Women’s Sexual Assault Centre of Renfrew County is spearheading the project. Joanne Brooks, Director of the Centre, says that the township council is on board with the project

In particular, Brooks says the monument will be dedicated to the memory of Carol Culleton, Anastasia Kuzyk and Nathalie Warmerdam. The initial stages of the project will include a public consultation that will happen in Madawaska Valley. The consultation will focus on the ideas and thoughts of the public on the upcoming inquest into the three womens’ murders. As the inquest is expected to come up in the summer of 2022, Brooks says putting the monument in the region felt right.

A specific location has not been decided on yet. However, Brooks will be joined by the Red Dress Productions team and Township staff to scout out potential locations sometime in January.
