Be aware of the signs of Chronic Wasting Disease, says Ministry

With hunting season in full swing, the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry wants hunters to be aware of the signs of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).

While it has not been detected in Ontario, CWD has the potential to severely reduce the populations of white-tail deer, moose, elk and caribou. The Ministry says it is easily spreadable, stays in the soil for years, and there is no cure or vaccine for the disease. In addition, they say infected animals may not show symptoms for several years.

Hunters are being urged to check for the signs of CWD in deer they come across. These include severe weight loss, tremors, stumbling or lack of coordination, excessive drooling and drooping head or ears. The Ministry says that deer may show abnormal behaviour, like indifference to people.

If you see these symptoms in deer, the Ministry is asking hunters to take pictures if possible and record the location of the animal. They then ask hunters to contact them by phone at 1-800-667-1940.
