As the heat continues across the region, both the Renfrew County District Health Unit (RCDHU) and Hastings Prince Edward Public Health (HPEPH) are reminding their residents of what they need to do to stay safe from the heat.
While not every area under the watch is under an official heat warning, both health units are urging people to take precautions as humidex values reach into the high 30’s. A deterioration in air quality is also possible over the next few days.
The RCDHU and HPEPH warn that vulnerable populations are at risk for heat-related illness. They ask both Hastings and Renfrew County residents to watch for the signs of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, fainting, nausea or vomiting, headache and rapid breathing. Extreme thirst and decreased urination with dark yellow urine are also signs of possible heat stroke.
They advise drinking non-alcoholic and decaffeinated liquids, preferably water. They also urge vulnerable populations to stay in cool areas and keep hydrated.
Environment Canada is predicting the heat to extend through until at least Wednesday.
