Upper Ottawa Valley OPP reminding motorists of the start of school

With kids going back to school in a few days, Upper Ottawa Valley OPP wants drivers to be aware that it will change traffic.

The detachment says with school buses on the road, along with extra pedestrians and cyclists, drivers should be prepared and give themselves extra time to get to their destination. Drivers should be prepared to yield to pedestrians and cyclists, while also urging parents to have conversations with their kids about their role in road safety.

The OPP are taking the opportunity to remind drivers that failing to stop for a school bus can land drivers up to $2000 in fines and up to six demerit points for a first offence. A second offence can include up to six months of jail time and up to $4000 in fines.

The Detachment will boost its road presence from August 31st until September 10th. During this time, they say they will take a zero tolerance approach to anyone who breaks the law when it comes to school buses.
