If you’re looking for a job, Statistics Canada is hiring.

StatsCan is hiring enumerators, who will do the legwork in getting people to complete the Census this year. They are looking for people over the age of 18 with the legal ability to work in Canada. These people will check on the homes assigned to them and will knock on doors to make sure people complete the census. The goal is to get as close to 100% completion as possible.

Geoff Bowlby, Director General with Stas Can, says gathering the data is an important part of running the country. Information will be used for things such as delineating the boundaries the MP’s represent. He says how billions of dollars of funding are decided, as well as what decisions will be made on behalf of the taxpayer, will use census data. This data will decide the placement of schools and hospitals and will be used in the COVID-19 vaccine distribution.

Bowlby stresses that, due to COVID-19, safety is top of mind, with enumerators double-masking, not allowed to enter dwellings and carrying hand sanitizer at all times. Due to the pandemic, StatsCan is making the internet an option to respond to the census. They say because of this, they expect only 2 in 10 households to fill out the census with paper copies

The census will be hiring 88 people in Renfrew County, 16 of which will be in Barry’s Bay. Applicants will need to have access to a vehicle and an internet connection. They will also be required to pass a criminal record check. To start the application process, click here.
