The Renfrew County District Health Unit is letting people know how the vaccines will be rolled out across the region.

Dr. Robert Cushman, Acting Medical Officer of Health, has said vaccines from Phizer or Moderna will be available in early February. However, there is no indication of the number of doses the unit will receive. While they wait to receive vaccines, the RCDHU says they have been working with staff from retirement homes, hospitals, long-term care and paramedics to plan the rollout.

The RCDHU will release the vaccine in phases. The first phase will aim to innoculate residents, staff and essential caregivers for seniors living in homes. Health care workers, adult recipients of chronic home healthcare and Indigenous adults will also be the first to get the shot. Phase 2, which the RCDHU plans to execute in late winter, will include all adults over 70 as well as additional care settings like shelters. After that, phase 3 will be open to the general public. No date has been given as to when phase 3 will happen.

The RCDHU still urges all residents to follow public health protocols while they wait for the vaccine.
