Upper Ottawa Valley OPP are investigating an assault of an elderly woman in Pembroke.
Officers responded the evening of August 20th to a report that an elderly woman had been hit in the head with a rock in the area of Isabella Street and Rotary Park. The victim was treated in hospital and later released. Police say this is just the latest in a series of ongoing harassment by a group of young people, that include committing vandalism to the victim’s home and yelling racial comments.
The group of four are aged 15-17, and were wearing shorts and baseball caps at the time of the assault. They were travelling by bike and one was wearing a red T-shirt. Police are asking those with information, especially security cam footage, to come forward. Anyone with information in the incident is asked to call police at 1-888-310-1122.
The incident has prompted a response from the Mayor of Pembroke Mike LeMay. He called the actions detrimental to the city we are working to create. He says that while racism has no place in society, it is unfortunately prevalent around the world. LeMay said the incident demonstrates the need to work harder to promote welcoming values and show residents that acceptance for all is the only way forward.
