Controversy Still Surrounding Algonquin Land Claim

With the Algonquin Land Claim Agreement in Principal being passed by a large vote, negotiations are set to begin.
One of the vocal detractors of the agreement is Chief Lance Hammond of the Kebaowek First Nation.
He says the final tally didn’t come as much of a surprise.

He was rather disappointed with the turnout though, since less than half of the eligible voters made their mark.
He has been petitioning the government to reconsider the agreement since 800,000 acres of Quebec Algonquin lands were overlapped in the Land Claim.

Hammond also argued that the Agreement in Principal voting process wasn’t legal since most of the eligible voters did not have status.
One positive has come of it though.
Hammond has been contacted by the provincial and federal negotiators to discuss his claim.
He hopes to have that meeting scheduled in April.
