Romance Scams Making The Rounds

Killaloe OPP is warning residents about romance scams that have the potential to cause severe financial hardship and personal embarrassment.
Police say victims are sought out online through singles and dating sites.
In some cases it involves prolonged interaction with scammers and tens of thousands of dollars before it ends without meeting.
Seniors are considered to be the most vulnerable to the scam.
They are reminding the public to never give out personal information online, or send money to anyone you do not know or trust.
It is also good practice to check websites carefully, as scammers often set up fake websites with addresses that are similar to legitimate dating sites.
In 2015, the romance scam generated almost 300 complaints and over 200 victims in Ontario who lost a combined $7.9 million.
Police also say that 95 percent of the crimes go unreported.
