According to the Canadian Journal of Public Health, there needs to be stronger warnings offered against giving young children cough medicine.
Research has found that one in five children are still treated with cough and cold medicine despite Health Canada warnings.
According to the Chair of the Drug Therapy Committee for the Canadian Pediatric Society Michael Rieder, accidental overdose can be fatal.
He says cough medicine actually does nothing and can only temporarily relieve small symptoms.
He advises that parents need to exercise patience and time when their child is sick.
Rieder also says that if necessary, a spoonful of honey has surprising results in kids.
