The Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation has declared a state of emergency.
That means that effective immediately, all businesses on the First Nation are closed. All non-essential staff were sent home, while essential staff were significantly reduced. The First Nation says that due to a significant number of their members having underlying health issues, they have passed motions to ensure the safety of the community. Council says that the First Nation will allow traffic to move through the reservation, so long as business owners comply with the order to close immediately. The state of emergency, in addition to closing businesses, will allow the First Nation to ensure timely access to outside funding and support. They also say it’s to ensure members recognize the severity of the current risk to the community.
The Algonquins of Pikwakanagan says this is an upgrade of a closure of all non-essential services that occurred on March 16th. However, the First Nation has seen a significant influx of people into the community, which they say increases the risk to front line workers. The First Nation says they are not following the example of other First Nations across Canada who have closed their roads to traffic completely. The First Nation says that while they may not be able to stop the virus from coming into the community, they can limit its spread if they all work together.
