The Elections in Pikwakanagan will go ahead, but they will be taking some precautions.

Electoral Officer Kassandra Sackaney says because there is no provision for Council’s term to be extended, elections need to go ahead. First Nations members are strongly encouraged to vote electronically or by return ballots. She says if you misplaced your pin number, you can retrieve it by emailing her, and providing your full name, registry number and birth date.

If you choose to do in-person polling, she says that Election’s staff has made some rules in coordination with the Pandemic Planning Committee. Only one voter at a time will be allowed into the polling station at the Makwa Center. Voters are to stay in their vehicles until security signs for you, and to keep a two meter distance between them and staff. Voters will also be directed to a sanitation station and will only be allowed in certain areas. The Electoral officer or deputy will place the ballot on the table and then step back to a safe distance. Voters will not be able to directly put their ballot in the ballot box, but will place their ballot on a table for the electoral officer to do it for them. Those voting by return ballot will follow similar rules to those voting in person. Voters will not be allowed outside taped areas in the Makwa centre, and for those voting in person, ballots will not be handed directly to anyone.

The polling station will be open from 9 AM till 7 PM tomorrow. Details about the procedure can be found here.
