Hockey has been put on halt for some leagues in Renfrew County.

The Opeongo Heritage Cup, that was to take place between March 27-29, has been cancelled due to concern over COVID-19. Commissioner of the Cup and Madawaska Valley Councillor David Schulist says the directive is in line with the government’s push for social distancing to contain the virus. Schulist says he hopes the public understands that while the Madawaska Valley has no cases of the coronavirus, he says it would only take one person coming home from the US or Canada to unknowingly bring it into the area. He says the heritage societies of Killaloe and Combermere, the Zurakowski Park committee and Barry’s Bay & Area Minor Hockey appreciate the public’s patronage and understanding. Schulist also says that they all look forward to next year.

Meanwhile the Pembroke Lumber Kings will halt their playoff run as all CCHL games have been suspended due to the outbreak. The Kings said on Twitter that their trip to Rockland to face off against the Nationals was “all for not” as the game was suspended. In a press release, the Central Canadian Hockey League says all games are cancelled until further notice effective immediately. They say information on when the season will resume will be announced when it becomes available.
