OPP: New Fraud Warns of Fake Scam

Another Phone Scam is causing problems for people in the county.

In a twist Upper Ottawa Valley OPP say that the new scam actually warns users of a scam. Police say scammers tell the victim that fraudulent accounts have been opened in their name. The scammers pretend to be police and ask for personal information like Social Insurance Numbers and banking information. Police remind the public that they would never ask for that kind of information over the phone.

In addition the scammers use phone spoofing technology, displaying the OPP’s 1-888 number. They say this causes the call sometimes to be read as Ontario Provincial Police by the call display technology. OPP reminds the public to verify the legitimacy of any caller before providing personal info over the phone.

They say if a scam artist contacts you or if you are defrauded, contact police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
