The Renfrew County District School Board’s annual report revealed some highs and some lows.

The report says that on testing such as the literacy test and math assessments, the board trails slightly behind the provincial average. Graduation rates are around 85% for five year courses and 76% for four year. The provincial averages for 2019 were 87 and 81 percent effectively. The report also lays out some pushes the school board has been doing over the past year. This includes expanding robotics training, as well as more integration in arts and sciences. The board has also expanded partnerships with the Renfrew Collegiate Institute and has expanded the number of international students coming to the county to study.

While there was a lot of progress outlined in the report, the report also outline a lot of challenges. A survey from the Learning Bar however sheds light on some issues the school board faces. The OurSchool survey addressed a number of questions surrounding bullying, school safety and exclusion. It was found that many students have positive relationships to school and that students value schooling outcomes in line with the national average. However, the report also stated that students in both elementary and secondary schools have higher levels of depression and anxiety than the national average. Standing out is a stat that says that less that 50% of elementary school students in the RCDSB feel safe attending school. Pino Buffone says that the number directly correlates with bullying at school, and that the RCDSB is working to address the problem.

The report can be found here.
