Dogs Soon to be Allowed in Select Algonquin Park Cabins And Yurts

Starting in April 2020, 14 cabins and yurts at various Ontario Parks will allow dogs – including at Mew Lake campground in Algonquin Park.

If you’re lucky enough to get Yurt 62 in the park, you will be allowed to bring your four-legged friend along for the trip. It will cost an additional $20 to bring your dog along, with a limit of two dogs.

“Some of our campers have medical conditions that prevent them from sharing spaces with pets,” Ontario Parks explains as to why all roofed accommodations aren’t dog-friendly. They add that others just want to enjoy a dog-free camping trip. They also point out that people with allergies will be looked after and won’t be put near a space that allows dogs.

If you’re already planning a trip for once the change comes into effect, Ontario Parks has some rules in place:

  • keep dog food stored in the roofed accommodation or in your car
  • make sure your dog is housetrained and that you clean up after it
  • keep your dog on a leash at all times when outside
  • do not leave your dog alone in the cabin or yurt

It’s noted that this rule only affects dogs. No other pets are permitted under this change.

A list of the other cabins and yurts that now allow dogs is available on Ontario Parks’ website.
