“Right now (schools and the school board) are still operating as usual,” Renfrew County District School Board representative Jonathan Laderoute tells My Barry’s Bay Now.

55,000 education workers with the Canadian Union of Public Employees. That includes janitorial staff, education assistants and secretaries. Laderoute points out that they must give five days notice before a potential strike.

“We just don’t know,” he says about a possible strike. “We have no indication here in our own district or beyond provincially.” Laderoute says they remain positive at the school board and hope an agreement can be worked out in time so that a work stoppage doesn’t happen.

CUPE is threatening a strike to push back against the cuts being made by Ontario’s government. President Laura Walton says these cuts will compromise the quality of education in the province.
