Labour Day Weekend Sees OPP Lay Thousands of Charges

OPP kept very busy over the long weekend.

OPP headquarters have released the full numbers for their Labour Day Long Weekend Campaign. The force focused on keeping down distracted driving. The force says over 250 charges for distracted driving were laid. Closer to home, 2 of those charges were laid by Killaloe OPP. They were part of 38 in total for OPP East Region.

The bulk of the charges came from speeding. Killaloe OPP reported very low numbers, with 22 charges laid throughout the weekend. It was a far cry from all of east region, that laid over 1200 charges for speeding. Overall OPP laid over 5000 charges for speeding. During the weekend OPP netted around 8000 charges during the blitz.

The long weekend also included some fatalities. Seven deaths in six accidents were reported by the force. One of those deaths police said was related to distracted driving. OPP also reported that there were no boating-related fatalities this long weekend.

OPP reminds drivers to take responsibility for their own safety and to make better decisions with their hand held devices on the roads.
