Madawaska Valley Fire Department were called to a blaze in Combermere on Friday.

A call was put in sometime during the 26th saying there was a fire at the intersection of Byers and Combermere roads. 6 trucks and 16 fire fighters attended the scene. A group of people were already on the scene helping quench the fire. The fire was close to a pine plantation that MVFD said would have added to the fire. Both north and south departments arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire in 40 minutes. MVFD says it used over a thousand gallons of water over an area of 400 square meters.

The cause of the fire was found to be a discarded cigarette on the shoulder of the road. The fire comes less than 24 hours after a level 2 fire ban was issued for the township. Madawaska Fire Department praised the bystanders who helped combat the fire. They say without their quick action, the fire would have been much more difficult to control. Their assistance was greatly appreciated by the MVFD
