Millennium Park will host the Algonquins of Ontario’s 2019 Nation Gathering.

“It’s a way for Algonquin communities in Ontario to come together and meet,” explains Chief and Algonquin Negotiation Representative Stephen Hunter. “Through dancing and singing and drumming, it’s a way for us to celebrate the rich history and culture we have in the territory.”

Hunter says the theme is “Nibi – Ginawayduganuc” which means “Water – we are all connected.” He says that it’s a theme we can all connect to.

“When we come to these gatherings we don’t just celebrate the connection with have with each other,” he says. “We come with the intent and the hope that we can visit with new people and make new friendships.” He says it’s also a great opportunity for others in the community to come together and get a “sense of the values that drive our people.”

Hunter says he’s always excited to see the youth get involved. It brings him joy to see the joy the kids get dancing, singing and joining in on the drum circle. He says he also likes seeing people from different Algonquin communities across the province come together, reminisce and renew friendships.  “The very friendships that our grandparents held so dear and put so much value in,” Hunter says.

It will start at 5:30 AM on July 13th with a sunrise ceremony at Eagles Nest Park and continue with other events going on until 4:30 PM. There will be food and entertainment on-site.
