With the heatwave around the corner, the risks are very real.

Renfrew Public Health unit is reminding people that the heat can be hazardous to your health. They say prolonged exposure to heat and humidity can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and in some cases death.

They stress to not leave children, adults or pets in parked cars or sleeping outside in direct sunlight. They also say anyone should avoid direct sunlight if they must go out, and to stick to shade and air conditioned buildings. At home they say to close the blinds, turn off the lights and not rely on fans during peak heat. They say to drink water and juice throughout the day and to avoid alcohol, caffeine or cola. They say to wear light clothes, avoid eating heavy meals and using your oven. For people who are taking medication, Public Health says to consult your doctor or pharmacist about potential side effects during the heat.

Public health says that while everyone is at risk in the heat, a greater danger is posed to the elderly, infants or people who are chronically ill or involved in physical activity outdoors. They remind people to check on neighbors and friends if they have a greater risk of developing complications. Public Health also says that even short exposure to the heat can lead to symptoms like nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, dificult or rapid breathing, headaches, convulsion and fever. If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, Public Health says to seek medical attention immediately.
