Ontario SPCA rolled out a spay and neuter unit in Pembroke on Monday.
The 38 foot trailer sports two surgical tables where up to 30 animals can be spayed or neutered a day. The unit comes fully equipped with two operating tables, oxygen, and is staffed with a vet surgeon and veterinary technician. Daryl Vaillancourt, Chief of Humane Programs & Community Outreach for Ontario SPCA says the unit has already been booked solid for the 2019 season. Vaillancourt says the next step is community outreach. The unit is going to be in Cornwall and Brockville this July, and Peterborough in August.
The trailer was made possible through a grant by the Pet Valu Giving Back Project. CEO Kate MacDonald says the best way to handle pet populations is prevention. The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society have said their operations prevented 5.3 Million kittens and puppies being born unwanted. As a result of the high volume of spay and neuter services, SPCA has seen a decrease of almost 50% of stray pets going through their doors.
