A number of presentations dominated this month’s Council Meeting.

One presentation was done by the Association of Ontario Road Supervisors. They will be holding the Provincial Safety Truck Rodeo in Renfrew County showing off the skills of road work drivers. That competition will take place September 10th and 11th. The event will include a trade show and obstacle course. The delegation said this competition results in better training practices, increase in business and is an opportunity for students to consider a career in public works. The team asked the council to send drivers to participate in the competition.

Another delegation was sent by the Renfrew County Legal Clinic. The clinic said they were on the verge of shutting down because of the Provincial Government cuts. The cuts affect the legal aid the clinic gives to impoverished people. The delegation said that while Renfrew’s clinics only received a small cut, some clinics saw cuts of up to 45% of their budget. The delegation said that their services directly put $1.5 million into the economy through money people save on legal services. The delegation request council write a letter of support to the county for the clinic. Council opted to instead help shape a position with the County and support that position.

Among other business, town council approved road closures, venues and expenditures for Canada Day Celebrations, promote Amanda Hudder to Treasurer and Janice Zelney to Deputy Treasurer, and approved the purchase of pavement for road resurfacing. A memorial plaque was also approved for the late Bill Green at the Paul J. Yakabuski community center for his service to minor hockey in the area.

Town Council will break for the month of July and resume regular meetings in August.
