Over 10,000 Speeding Charges During Road Safety Week

The numbers for Road Safety Week are in.

The OPP laid almost 12,000 vehicle charges during the week. The vast majority, 10,095 charges, were for speeding. The week lasted from the 14th to the 20th.

In addition, 525 charges were laid for not wearing a seat-belt and 251 were laid for distracted driving. Alcohol and drug impaired driving accounted for 162 charges.

Closer to home, OPP East Region said impaired driving is an increasing problem. During the week they laid 34 alcohol impairment charges. They also laid one charge for drug impaired driving.

The OPP is taking part in numerous campaigns over the summer that center on Road Safety. It’s part of a larger Canada-wide initiative to make the country’s roads the safest in the world.

OPP is now focusing on boater safety with Safe Boating Awareness Week. That wraps up this weekend.
