RCTJC Monitoring Bus Camera Pilot

The Renfrew County Joint Transportation Consortium would consider putting cameras on their busses to catch drivers passing busses when the lights are flashing.

RCJTC General Manager Robert White says the group is always in support of measures to ensure child safety. The RCJTC has been keeping tabs on the technology for the past two years.

The technology is currently undergoing a pilot project in the City of Ottawa. When the lights start flashing for school buses, the camera starts filming and catches the license plates of any car trying to pass.

While concrete numbers as to cost are unavailable, White predicts that outfitting every bus could cost approximately $4 million dollars. He says that outside funding would be a huge incentive to equip busses with the technology.

White says it is always a concern when motorists pass a bus, as it could have dangerous consequences.
