“It was a good year”.

That’s the message from Erin Vereyken, Acting Coordinator of Clinical Services for Renfrew County and District Health Unit (RCDHU) as they wrap up their immunization surveillance in local schools. She says that, when comparing this year and last year, the numbers went down when it comes to suspending students for not having an up-to-date immunization record.

Vereyken states that as of March 28th, they’ve started enforcing suspensions (more than a month after final notices were sent home). She says there are approximately 15 000 students between the ages of 4 and 17 within Renfrew County and that this year, they’ve suspended 188 of them.

She says that schools and parents were very cooperative in the process and adds that they are now getting the last few kids up to date in order to get them back to school as soon as possible.
