Cell Phone Ban Not an Issue in Renfrew County, Says Chair of School Board

Students understand that cell phones are okay for educational purposes.

Chair of Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB), Susan Humphries says this after the Province announced that it would ban cell phones in Ontario schools come September.

She says that although the Provincial Government says they are banning them, if you read the fine print, Humphries says that it states that students will still be allowed to use them for educational purposes.  She also adds that there are certain exceptions when it comes to the ban for students with health issues or special education needs which will allow them to use a cell phone. She says she’s not too worried because RCDSB are already abiding by those rules so come September, it’ll be business as usual.

Humphries says that “it hasn’t been a big issue” stating that “we found that in Renfrew County, students do understand that we are okay if they use them during the day for educational purposes”. She says that the school board will empower their Principals and teachers with the trust to make the right decisions when taking action against specific cases of students who are distracted by their cell phones because, as she says, “they know them best”.
