Barry’s Bay To Host a Choir and Orchestra of 70 Musicians and Singers

Close to 70 musicians and singers will be on stage Saturday afternoon.

That’s because Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College (OLSWC) in Barry’s Bay will be teaming up with Our Lady of the Wayside Catholic School to present Faure’s Requiem. Director of Music, Dr. Richard Heinzle says they will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra (French horns, cello, organ, string section).

Dr. Heinzle, also a professor at OLSWC, says that Gabriel Faure (French composer and pianist) started writing this musical piece in 1888 and it wasn’t until 1900 that it was first published. He adds that to this day, it is one of the most performed requiems world-wide and that “it has stood the test of time which is why people will enjoy it”. The requiem itself is 35 minutes long but other select pieces will also be added which should give the show a total run time of 60 minutes.

Performing on stage, he says, there will be approximately 30 students from OLSWC (as well as staff members), and 25 from Our Lady of the Wayside Catholic School, who hail from Peterborough. In addition, Dr. Heinzle says that a dozen musicians are travelling from Ottawa and Toronto to form the chamber orchestra.

As the Director of Music, Dr. Heinzle says “it’s my job to keep everything together and to get the performers to sing and play the music with emotion”. Although it’s his first year at OLSWC, Dr. Heinzle says that it’s been a pleasure to get to discover the wonderful community. He says “I think it’s wonderful for a small town to have all these performers, it’s something special” in the hopes that people come out so more concerts can be put on. He also took the time to thank the community for participating and Madawaska Valley District High School for lending them their auditorium.

It all starts at 2:30 on Saturday afternoon at Madawaska Valley District High School. Entry is by donation.
