Take precautions when it comes to spring flooding.

Corwin Quade, Fire Chief of Madawaska Valley Township Fire Department says that flooding updates will be sent out regularly starting this week, but till then, you should still be on the lookout for rising levels of water.

He says that if your home is prone to flooding, you should take certain precautions. He says you should shovel off at least 2-3 feet of snow around your house so the ice and snow have somewhere to run. He adds that having ice and snow too close to your home will cause it to seep into your foundation during the melt.

Chief Quade also states that if you’re on the road and come across a flow of water, you might not want to take the chance. Quade adds that you never know how deep the water will be and if the road is washed out underneath.

Madawaska Valley Township has approximately 5000 sand bags on hand he says and that they may be able to help in the case of an emergency but also says that homeowners are responsible for their own property.
