March is Fraud Prevention month and the OPP want you to be careful.

The OPP is taking the time to promote public awareness this month to prevent you from being a victim of a scam.

They say that Ontarian’s have lost approximately 45 million dollars due to fraud this year which represents only 5% of victims that report them to the police.

Detective Anne Goodwin of the OPP’s Anti-Rackets Branch says that victims can be left with financial, emotional and psychological consequences which is why it’s important to report it.

Homeowners are also cautioned to be careful about the Renfrew Hydro scam that has been noticed in the Town of Renfrew. Renfrew OPP Constable Tina Hunt has reported that people are calling residents portraying to be from Renfrew Hydro wanting to set up an in-person appointment in regards to installing a new furnace (for more on that specific scam, click here).

Hunt says that you should never give out any personal or banking information to anyone at the door, on the phone or by email. If you fall victim, even if a financial transaction didn’t happen, contact the police.
