Whitney To Host Fishing Derby for Kids

Spend the morning fishing with your kids.

That’s the message from Brandie Dubreuil, one of the coordinators of Whitney’s “Kids, Cops and Canadian Tire Fishing Days” fishing derby.

She says the annual event is in its 12th year and it never fails to attract kids from the region. She states that they’ve had as many as 214 kids register one year. Two years ago, when it was -33 degrees outside, she said they had 93 children sign up which shows how appreciated it is. She adds that every child that joins in and registers receives a loot bag filled with surprises.

People dropping in to the event might even get to take part in dog sled races. She says it’s not confirmed (weather depending) if the dogs will be out but there’s a good chance they will be.

Dubreuil says that kids can register from 8:30-10:00 and that fish weigh-ins are at noon. Fish prizes and draw prizes will then be awarded and a free lunch of chili, hot dogs and hot chocolate will be served. It’s happening this Saturday at Poverty Lake (Old Highway 127) in Whitney.
