A 40 student production play is ready to wow Madawaska Valley.

Our Lady Seat of Wisdom (OLSW) College in Barry’s Bay is ready to make you laugh with their annual play. This year the production is called Pirates of Penzance.

Lead actor Anthony Hamon and stage manager Brenna Wehrle say that the operetta features 3 different groups of choruses of 10-15 students. Wehrle says they have a team of 30-40 students working hard to put on a dynamite show. She says that they also have a crew of 10-15 students who take care of stage production such as props, costumes and hair and makeup. The singers and actors, accompanied by the College’s musical director on the piano, will surely wow the crowd.

Hamon says that “I have a few spoken lines and there are moments where we break from song but most of it is singing” and adds that even kids would have a great time watching this satirical and musical comedy.

Wehrle, a third year student at OLSW, says they’ve been preparing the show for about four months. She says it’s an exciting time for the student population who have their parents visit for the weekend to watch the show. Hamon also mentions that “many of my Profs keep telling me they’re excited to see me perform” which has created a buzz in the community.

“The biggest draw is the comedy, the plot itself is ridiculous” Wehrle says and adds that sometimes even the actors have a hard time keeping a straight face while they rehearse.

They both conclude by stating that they really appreciate the community’s support. “Barry’s Bay isn’t just a place to go to school, a lot of students appreciate the area and you don’t get a lot of that in other Colleges” Wehrle says. They say that they hope the community comes out and supports the play and hopes the College can use that as a connecting force between both parties.

The play will be held at Madawaska Valley District High School on March 1st, 2nd and 3rd.  Tickets can be purchased at Lorraine’s Pharmasave or by stopping by or calling the College at 613-756-3082. For more information, click here.
