Mechanical Failure Could’ve Caused Fire At Pembroke Mill

Investigators say the cause of the fire is not suspicious.

Those are the words from Fire Chief of the Pembroke Fire Department, Dan Herback. He says this following the investigation on the massive fire that erupted in Pembroke on January 2nd. The fire had caused a major power outrage in the City before being restored ten hours later.

He adds that the investigators think the fire might have been caused by a mechanical failure.

After hearing the news that two fires broke out at a planing mill in Combermere on Thursday and Saturday, Herback says these mills are usually well equipped for fires. They have fire brigades, he says, where staff can take care of fires internally. Obviously, they are more susceptible to fires due to the sawdust, he says when it comes to Pembroke mill, he was surprised a fire happened there as the department hasn’t had a history with them in the past. Herback says the best kind of prevention these mills can do is to have up-to-date maintenance programs.

When it comes to fire safety, Herback says employees should always be aware of where fire safety equipment is within their work area.
