Online fraud cases have been keeping the OPP busy this week.

The Renfrew detachment of the OPP are investigating after a resident of Whitewater Region Township provided a credit card number to a scammer who was pretending to be Microsoft. The victim’s computer had froze and then got a call from someone pretending they could repair it. Approximately $1200 was stolen from the victim.

The Killaloe detachment of the OPP have recently responded to multiple fraud complaints involving the sharing of personal information as well.

In the hopes of raising awareness and making you more “Fraud Savvy”, they want to remind you to never give any personal information over the phone unless you have initiated the contact. They also say that you shouldn’t try, buy or reply to spam or banking requests. In terms of your wallet, carry only the cards you need to and put other important documentation in a safe place. Shred any documentation that has personal information on it and add to remember that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
