Dispose or Reuse Your Ashes

Don’t leave your ashes inside your house.

Many families have been keeping themselves warm by the fireplace over the holidays which can cause a buildup of ashes in many households. That’s why Fire Chief of the Madawaska Valley Township Fire Department, Corwin Quade, wants you to be careful. He says that wood burners should leave their ashes outside at least 3-5 days before disposing of them. He suggests to have them in a steel pail, away from any structure including a deck. He says that ashes are tricky, a pile can appear cold but may still have hot coal under it (which can then spread with the wind).

He does add that you can then find different uses for ashes such as traction aids in case your car is stuck in an icy spot. He adds that if you do so, watch out for nails as certain people burn wood that has been used for other purposes. Quade says you can also use them as natural fertilizer to grow vegetation in the summer. If you want to dispose of them, he says that the township offers an ash pick up service
