The Township of Madawaska Valley will wait before coming to a decision on cannabis retail stores.

At tonight’s council meeting, Mayor Kim Love and Councillors of Madawaska Valley Township had a preliminary discussion about opting in or out in regards to having cannabis retail stores in the township.

Today was the first day where private companies were able to submit their request to open a retail location for cannabis. All applications are processed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). The Township is not consulted or advised about the application and will be given 15 business days to say their peace on the application. The application will be posted on the AGCO website and the on the property itself.

As of now, in 444 municipalities in Ontario, 17 have opted in and 8 have opted out.

At the end of the meeting, council agreed that it would be better to make a decision closer to the deadline of January 22nd in order to get as much information on the subject as possible. Council’s next meeting will be on Tuesday January 8th.
