Propane Leak at Valley Manor

The Valley Manor in Barry’s Bay called the fire department with an emergency this morning.

Fire Chief of the Madawaska Valley Township Fire Department, Corwin Quade, says there was a propane leak at the Manor and the fire department was called around 7:00 AM.

He says that it didn’t cause a danger to the public or the residents but does say that one could smell the propane from the Manor to Highway 60. He also points out that propane safety is important. He says everyone should have a Carbon Monoxide detector, especially if you use propane at home.

He says the Manor’s staff members smelled a scent of propane in the kitchen and in the common area. The carbon monoxide detector did go off but they didn’t know why at first. That’s when they called the fire department. Fire fighters worked for 3 hours to shut the tank’s valves, close off the inside vents of the manor and to get the propane infused air out and fresh air back inside.

The problem was with the tank’s regulator Chief Quade adds. He says the regulator was frozen so pressure built up within the propane tank and it was pushing gas back out in the vents.

He says the firefighters worked hard and were out of there by 11:50 AM when everything at the Manor was back to normal.
