Fire in Barry’s Bay

A fire erupted in Barry’s Bay this weekend.

Minutes before the Santa Claus parade started on Saturday, the Madawaska Valley Township Fire Department responded to a call about a chimney fire on Zilney Street.

Fire Chief Corwin Quade says fire fighters were on site within 3 minutes of receiving the call. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured though one person almost didn’t make it.
He says one man suffered from smoke inhalation because he had gone back into the house to recover some of his property and ultimately passed out. Quade says firefighters had to drag him out and although he refused medical assistance, the man did go to the hospital the next day.

Chief Quade also told us that the house is owned by a man and a woman in their 50’s or 60’s. Along with their cat, they were not harmed. Luckily, the fire was controlled early on and neighbours were not affected.

He says firefighters fought the flames for 2 hours and cleaned up for another 30 minutes. He estimates that the fire caused 60 000$ worth in damage.
