Black Friday in the Valley

The Barry’s Bay BIA says Black Friday (November 23) is a fun day for customers.

Ted Williamson, chairman of the BIA says participating businesses are making their prices interesting for local customers. He says it’s a fun sale for the customers as businesses tend to make special one day crashes. He elaborates and says that those are unique offers designed to last one day.

He says historically, Black Friday was considered to be the first day of the holiday season (first Friday after American thanksgiving) where big chain companies would show profit. Instead of being in the red (to show they were not profitable), their bank statement numbers were written in black ink. He says they would call it Black Friday to represent the ink on their bank statements that day.

Nowadays, Black Friday is celebrated differently by individual merchants, Williamson says and adds that many local businesses tend to spread their exceptional prices over multiple days.
