Petawawa Strikes – Pembroke Awaits

The strike has struck in Petawawa and now Pembroke awaits.

Wade Wallace, President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers of local 588 in Pembroke says that their goal is to send a message to the employer without disrupting the delivery to their clients.

Petawawa saw their local affected on Monday, and Wallace says it has affected Pembroke as well. He doesn’t know when it will be Pembroke’s turn to shut down for a day or so as he states “we get told an hour or two before a shift”.

Wallace says one of the agreements they would like to reach is salary equity between rural carriers, and urban carriers. In total, approximately 60 employees could be affected if a rotating strike should hit in Pembroke (including its surrounding regions).

Wallace hopes that one day of disruption is all it will take to get the message across as just one extra day of waiting has a great impact on a customer. This is especially true when it comes to clients waiting for a delivery that is medically or monetarily related. Wallace really hopes “it gets settled before it gets too far”.
