OPP Warns Parents to be Wary of Online Threats to Kids

There are many dangers lurking around every corner for children on the internet.

Police say kids may not be prepared for these dangers like cyber-bullying and online predators either. That’s why parents need to not only educate their kids about online safety but keep themselves educated as well, says Central Region OPP Sergeant Jason Folz.

“Parents need to be aware of what their kids are on, what social media sites they’re on and how they are using their devices,” says Folz. “That means becoming a little bit more tech savvy than some of us started out.”

Folz says parents should also make sure kids are never alone in places like the bathroom or their bedroom while using online devices with cameras.

He says parents and kids should be wary of potential predator red flags.

“Certainly anybody that’s asking to meet in person, especially from people they’ve never met before.”
