A Madawaska Valley resident has lost $45,000 because of a phone scam.

Killaloe OPP responded to a call over the weekend on Combermere Road. An investigation revealed that the complainant has been scammed out of $45,000 because of a Mega Millions phone scam. The scammer called asking the prize winner to send money through bank drafts prior to collecting the winnings.

There have been multiple different phone scams over the summer and into the fall in Madawaska Valley. In August, Upper Ottawa Valley OPP warned about a phone scam where people were called and told there were involved in a lawsuit. The most recent new scam came late last month when Upper Ottawa Valley OPP said they’ve been receiving calls about scammers posing as the OPP looking for people to donate money to the OPP’s Community Bear Program.

OPP are reminding the community that a legitimate contest will never ask for money prior to prize pick-up. They are reminding you to always ask questions if you’re suspicious and, if all else fails, hang-up.
